Do I need an infectious disease specialist?

While general practitioners or internal medicine doctors can handle many common infections, an infectious disease specialist has received years of specialized training to diagnose and understand all infectious diseases, including complex and rare infections. ID specialists know how different antibiotics or other drugs fight infections and also understand the potential side effects of those treatments.

Infectious disease specialists regularly treat patients who have contracted diseases and infections including Lyme Disease, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, cholera, dengue, cryptosporidiosis, encephalitis, influenza, malaria, measles, meningitis, rotavirus, shigellosis, tuberculosis, typhoid and yellow fever.
